Industrial wastewater that flows out from industrial production processes contain harmful substances that cause pollution and cannot be discarded directly. Japan has established the discharge standards (With Ordinance of the Prime Minister's Office; prefectural governments can create more stringent standards with regulations) with the Water Quality Pollution Prevention Act and Sewerage Act for limiting the drainage to rivers or public sewers, and businesses engaged in industrial production are required to implement appropriate wastewater treatment to meet effluent standards.
Aisan Industry Co., Ltd. manufactures and sells “Ecomax”, a flocculant for drainage using environmentally friendly natural minerals as the raw material. Approximately 50 different types are available that match the contents of the drainage, and many types of drainage can be purified.
Aisan Industry Co., Ltd. was founded in 1970 mainly to design, manufacture, and sell wastewater treatment equipment. In 2000, they launched “Ecomax” by working on the development of a flocculant considering “Water is a recyclable resource” in view of the future global environment and recycling-oriented society. Mr. Takayanagi, representative director of the company, said that they took time to complete the project as the priority was the environment and they blended natural ore which was the main component with approximately ten types of components having a low environmental impact, and changed the composition according to the kind of harmful substance.
When “Ecomax” is put into the drainage, the dirt substance becomes a floc (lump). It works based on the principle that the dirt substance has negative ions, and the natural ore which is the main component of “Ecomax” has positive ions, and when both mix, they adhere to each and the dirt substance is neutralized by forming lumps. The ores have fine holes, and they can also absorb the odor. By removing the lumps, water can be cleaned to a level that does not impact the ecosystem.
The “Himedaka (gold colored Japanese rice fish) test” is used to inspect the degree of purification of water. “Himedaka” is an aquarium fish, and it is used to inspect the degree of water purification as they are difficult to breed and more susceptible to the environment than Kuromedaka (black Japanese rice fish). The survival rate of the fish was 100 percent even 96 hours after water was purified using “Ecomax”. Due to its high level of safety, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism registered “Ecomax” to NETIS, New Technology Information System (data to actively utilize new technologies developed by private companies in public works) in 2017.
“Ecomax” is characterized by its low environmental impact and fewer processes to complete the work. Conventionally, purification of polluted water is often carried out in 3 to 4 steps.
The use of flocculants typically involves the following four steps:
(1) Control the pH of polluted water according to the flocculants used
(2) Dissolve the flocculant in water (when powdered flocculants are used)
(3) Charge and agitate
(4) pH treatment
Since “Ecomax” is neutral, it does not require pH management. When it is added to contaminated water and stirred, the chemical substance forms floc in a short time. The process is completed by just removing the floc. Ecomax does not require equipment, and the number of people needed for the operation is less compared to conventional methods.
Approximately 50 types of “Ecomax” is available in powder and liquid form for different types of drainage contamination. Some typical applications include wastewater from various factories, paint drainage (such as water, oil, UV, and urethane), construction wastewater, organic drainage such as fisheries, livestock, and food industries, road water of factories, core boring wastewater, and drainage discharged in the biofuel production process which uses waste edible oil as a raw material. Since it is necessary to select the most suited “Ecomax” to purify wastewater depending on its type, the company carries out a beaker test using the drainage sample to select the flocculant.
According to Mr. Takayanagi of the company, the future development plan is to increase the number of substances supported as flocculation has still not been achieved for some materials. The company has a strong will to implement its corporate slogan, “Recycle water with less burden on the environment”. He also expressed his enthusiasm for recycling resources saying, “We want to develop a system and chemicals for the floc that is collected during the purification of drainage so that it can be reused for concrete after it is dried”.
