Visualizing "Closed Spaces," Which is Difficult to Judge Among the Three Cs

In 2020, when COVID-19 plunged the world into chaos, the Japanese government recommended avoiding the "Three Cs," which are "closed spaces," "crowded places," and "close-contact settings," as one of the approaches to preventing the spread of infection, and these behaviors are becoming a habit among the public. However, compared to "crowded places" and "close-contact settings," which can be judged visually to some extent, "closed spaces with poor ventilation" are more difficult to determine.

Sibata Scientific Technology's "Air Quality Monitoring Device Series" is a series of devices that can easily check whether a room environment meets the criteria of "closed spaces" * as shown by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. The series consists of four measuring instruments: CO2 meter, dust indicator, anemometer, and differential pressure gauge. Overcrowding of people can be determined by CO2 concentration, stagnation of air can be determined by dust concentration, and proper ventilation by an anemometer. The differential pressure gauge can be used to primarily check the difference in air pressure between the inside and outside of a closed space.

Each instrument is equipped with a display on its body that shows the readings, as well as Bluetooth communication functionality. Therefore, the monitoring status can be viewed and managed on smartphones and tablets. In addition, their data logging function allows the user to output the measurement data to a PC and convert it to a text file. The instruments other than the anemometer have an alarm function that issues an alarm when the set threshold is exceeded.
*The guideline issued by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare is as follows: "If a room complies with the air quality adjustment standards provided in the Building Administration Law, it satisfies the required ventilation volume (30 m3 per person per hour). Then the room is not considered to be a closed space with poor ventilation."

Higher Accuracy and Lower Priced than Conventional Products

Each instrument's measuring range is as follows: 350 to 4,000 ppm with CO2 meter, 10 to 600 μg/m3 with the dust indicator, 0.05 to 10.00 m/s with the anemometer, and -60.0 to +60.0 Pa with the differential pressure gauge. These instruments have the same temperature and humidity measurement ranges, which are -10 to 100°C and 10% to 95% rh.

The company, which holds the top share of the indoor environment measuring instrument market, has increased the integration and density of its products taking advantage of the MEMS * technology effectively to achieve power savings, small sizes, and reduced weight. By improving the efficiency of the calibration equipment beyond that of previous products, it also improved its products' measurement accuracy. In addition to the use as an infection prevention measure to monitor "closed spaces," the series could be used in various applications, including passive smoking measures, work environment measures, leak monitoring at worksites with asbestos, epidemiological studies, and more. Differential pressure meters may also help control the risk of infection when used in facilities that require negative pressure control, such as infectious disease wards and PCR laboratories, which are currently under challenging conditions.
