They got the opportunity to utilize doppler sensors about ten years ago when they received orders to manufacture speed detectors for highways and to detect abnormalities such as sudden changes in the physical condition of guests staying in single rooms of business hotels.
The Doppler sensor responds to “Motion”. The sensor can detect moving objects and differences in speed. For example, when the shower is used for a long time in the hotel, the temperature sensor senses the temperature of the hot water in the shower and human body heat due to which it cannot detect only the human body. Even if the physical condition of the guest suddenly changes and they collapse while taking a shower, it cannot be identified from the outside.
Using Doppler sensors, it is possible to detect if a human body is moving or stationary. Since it is possible to determine if the person is moving, stationary, or not detected by setting to a sensitivity that can detect heartbeat and respiration of the human body, it can be used to detect any abnormal situation at an early stage while safeguarding the privacy of the person.
The company developed a non-contact type detection, monitoring, and notification system for the motion of the human body using the Doppler sensor technology.
Initially, the system was developed for business hotels and hospitals, but it is also being utilized in nursing facilities to monitor the elderly.
The condition of the person targeted for observation and monitoring is detected by the Doppler sensor and controller as “Moving”, “Stationary”, and “Not detected”. The sensed data is sent to the front desk of hotels or nurse station at hospitals using a dedicated low-power radio communication and a system that allows confirmation on the PC screen enables 24-hour remote monitoring.
The information can be transmitted to a wristwatch-type receiver designed and developed by the company. The receiver is an indoor communication device using dedicated low-power radio communication and notifies with vibration, sound, and message on receiving any abnormality information. If Doppler sensors are installed at homes with elderly requiring nursing care, caregivers can wear the receiver on their arms and if they are within the range (straight line distance of 170 to 200 m with unobstructed view) of the dedicated low-power radio communication, any abnormality can immediately be noticed even when the caregiver is not watching the elderly person.
A single unit of the Doppler sensor can cover a room of size ranging between 10 to 13 m2. As the sensor sensitivity changes with the room shape, arrangement of furniture and electronic items, the company will visit the installation site for inspection, adjust sensitivity to decide the sensor location and provide complete support up to installation. Even if there are any problems or malfunction after installation, or if users face any difficulty, the company that has designed and developed the system will provide repair and readjustment services.
The company has many sensor technologies in addition to the Doppler sensor.
For example, pressure sensors can be embedded into the bedding to detect heartbeat and body movements while sleeping. The Doppler sensor is a non-contact type which can be used for a long time after installation, but there are some problems in regulating the sensitivity. While pressure sensors are highly sensitive to the heartbeat, the drawback is that they required to be installed each time.
The company uses sensors appropriate for the purpose after comparing the advantages and disadvantages, and in some cases, multiple sensors may be used to develop a device for acquiring the required information. The complete system is built considering how easy it is to analyze and output the data obtained. Akio Yoshinuma, director of the company spoke about his interest, “Going forward, we will focus on increasing the types of sensors that can be used to meet any purpose and to provide complete system support”.
